Introduction to the Free PDF Editor & Creator
Working with PDF documents is a daily reality for professionals, students, and anyone who handles digital paperwork. Whether you need to draft a polished report, create a formatted invoice, annotate a contract, or mark up a design proof, the ability to create and edit PDFs directly in your browser eliminates the need for expensive desktop software like Adobe Acrobat, Foxit PhantomPDF, or Nitro Pro.
Our Free PDF Editor & Creator is a powerful, all-in-one tool that operates entirely inside your web browser. There is nothing to download, no account to create, and no file size or usage limits. Every operation—from rich text formatting to interactive, draggable PDF annotations—happens locally on your device, ensuring your documents remain completely private.
Two Powerful Modes in One Tool
The PDF Editor & Creator is built around two distinct workflows, accessible through a simple mode switcher at the top of the tool:
Create New PDF Mode
This mode transforms your browser into a full-featured word processor. You start with a blank page styled to match a real A4 (or Letter, Legal, A3, A5) sheet, and you write your document using a comprehensive rich text editor toolbar.
Everything you would expect from a desktop editor is included:
- Text Formatting: Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, and subscript
- Headings: Six heading levels (H1 through H6) for proper document structure
- Typography: Choose from 8 font families (Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Courier New, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Tahoma, Lucida Console) and 7 font sizes
- Colors: Text foreground color picker and background highlight color picker
- Paragraph Controls: Left, center, right, and full justification; ordered and unordered lists; indent and outdent; adjustable line spacing (1.0, 1.15, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0)
- Block Elements: Block quotes with styled left-border formatting
- Tables: Insert tables with configurable rows and columns, complete with styled headers
- Images: Insert images directly from your device—they are embedded inline in the document
- Links: Add hyperlinks with custom display text
- Page Layout: Horizontal rules, page breaks, and a visual page divider
- Page Setup: Choose page size (A4, Letter, Legal, A3, A5), orientation (portrait/landscape), and margin preset (Normal, Narrow, Wide, None)
- Undo/Redo: Full support for reversing and replaying your edits
When you are finished composing your document, click Download PDF and a polished, professional PDF is generated instantly from your formatted content.
Edit Existing PDF Mode
Already have a PDF that needs annotations? Switch to Edit Existing PDF mode. Drag and drop (or browse to select) any PDF file up to 50 MB. The tool renders every page of your document in high resolution directly in the browser.
We have recently upgraded the Edit Mode to a fully interactive, object-based canvas system. Once loaded, a rich annotation toolbar appears with seven distinct tools:
- Select / Move Tool: The most powerful addition to the editor. Click any annotation you’ve created to instantly select it. A bounding box and a rotation handle will appear, allowing you to freely drag the object around the page or rotate it to any angle.
- Text Tool: Click anywhere on a page to place an editable text box. Once placed, use the floating toolbar to change the Font Family, or apply Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strikethrough formatting.
- Draw Tool: Freehand draw on any page with adjustable pen color and thickness. Perfect for signatures, checkmarks, arrows, and handwritten notes.
- Highlight Tool: Click and drag to highlight a rectangular region with a semi-transparent color overlay—ideal for marking important passages.
- Image Stamp: Upload an image from your device and click to stamp it onto any page. Use this for signature images, company logos, or approval stamps.
- Rectangle Tool: Draw outlined rectangles to frame or box content on the page.
- Whiteout Tool: Draw a solid white box over existing text or images to completely erase or hide them, allowing you to type over the old content with the Text tool.
The editor also features a robust Undo / Redo history that tracks your last 15 actions, ensuring you can quickly revert any accidental drags, deletions, or formatting mistakes.
All annotations—including their exact rotations, fonts, and positions—are then baked directly into the PDF when you export using the advanced pdf-lib library. The result is a standard PDF file that can be shared, printed, or archived with your annotations permanently embedded.
How to Use the PDF Editor & Creator
Using the tool is intuitive and requires no prior experience:
- Choose Your Mode: At the top of the tool, click “Create New PDF” to start a blank document, or click “Edit Existing PDF” to annotate an uploaded file.
- Create Mode — Write Your Content: Use the two-row toolbar to format your text. Select headings, change fonts, apply bold or italic styles, insert tables and images, and use page breaks to control pagination. The editor canvas is styled like a real printed page for a WYSIWYG experience.
- Edit Mode — Upload and Annotate: Drop a PDF file into the upload area. Select an annotation tool (like Text or Highlight) and click on the page.
- Edit Mode — Manipulate Objects: Switch to the “Select” tool to drag, reposition, or rotate your newly created objects. Use the Undo/Redo buttons if you make a mistake.
- Export Your PDF: Enter a filename in the export panel at the bottom and click Download PDF. Your finished document is generated and downloaded instantly.
Understanding the Technology Behind the Tool
This tool is powered by industry-standard open-source JavaScript libraries integrated into an advanced DOM-based overlay system:
- pdf-lib: A pure JavaScript library for creating and modifying PDF documents. It handles everything from embedding exact font styles and processing rotation matrices to drawing SVG paths and images directly into the PDF structure.
- interact.js: Enables the smooth, hardware-accelerated dragging, resizing, and rotation of individual annotation elements within the browser.
- html2pdf.js: Converts HTML content (from the rich text editor in Create Mode) into a multi-page PDF by capturing the rendered DOM as a high-resolution canvas.
- pdf.js: Mozilla’s PDF rendering engine, used to display existing PDF pages as pixel-perfect background images for the interactive annotation overlay.
Because all these libraries run entirely in the browser, there is zero server communication. Your documents are never transmitted over the network.

Why Choose a Browser-Based PDF Editor?
Traditional PDF editing software comes with significant friction: large download sizes, license fees, operating system restrictions, and privacy concerns about cloud-based services. Our browser-based approach eliminates all of these barriers:
| Feature | Desktop Software | Cloud Services | Our Tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | $150–$350/year | $0–$20/month | Free |
| Installation | Large download | None | None |
| Privacy | Local processing | Files uploaded | 100% Local |
| Interactivity | Basic | Basic | Advanced (Drag/Rotate) |
| Sign-up Required | Yes | Usually | No |
| File Limits | None | Often restricted | None |
Tips for Getting the Best Results
- Use the Select Tool for Precision: Don’t worry about placing a text box perfectly on the first try. Drop it roughly where you need it, then use the Select tool to precisely drag and rotate it into place.
- Leverage Undo/Redo: The editor tracks your last 15 actions in Edit mode. Don’t be afraid to experiment with formatting or object placement!
- Use Page Breaks wisely: In Create mode, insert page breaks before major sections to ensure clean pagination in the exported PDF.
- Use high-quality images: Images inserted into the editor or stamped onto a PDF are embedded at their original resolution, so higher quality source images produce better-looking PDFs.
Privacy and Security
Privacy is not an afterthought—it is the foundation of this tool’s architecture. Because every operation is performed using client-side JavaScript:
- No file uploads: Your PDF files and written content never leave your browser.
- No server processing: There is no backend server involved in any creation or editing operation.
- No data storage: Nothing is saved, cached, or logged by our platform.
- No account required: You can use every feature immediately without providing an email address or creating an account.
This makes our PDF Editor & Creator ideal for handling sensitive documents such as financial records, legal contracts, medical forms, and personal identification documents.
